To-day we shall findamong those who love fine horses and the open-air life that isassociated with riding and driving, and who find joy in sailingyachts and kindred sports, are possessed of a vital, manly,healthful spirit, at once honorable and strong for achievement. The subject of the present sketch, Mr. H. K. Bloodgood, maybe reckoned a typical American devotee of these wholesalesports He is a native of Mobile, Alabama, and inherits a largemeasure of the chivalrous nature which is the proverbial pos-session of the people of the South. It was about the year 1892that he began to pay serious attention to the thoroughbredhorse He interested himself especially in the hackney class, inwhich at that time this country was supposed to lag considerablybehind England. H. K. BLOODGOOD 15 has in recent years been so marked an increase of interest insuch horses, and so great an improvement in their form, untilnow American hackneys and harness horses generally are ableto challenge comparison with any in the world. Mr. Bloodgoodhas for years been esteemed one of the very best judges of hack-ney and harness horses, and one of the most accomplished gentlemen horsemen in this country. Mr. Bloodgood has at the same time become equally prominentin the dog-fancying world. He holds several important placesin committees of the American Kennel Club, and is a prominentmember also of the Spaniel Club, which latter owes much to hislabors, influence, and generosity. In his own kennels he hassome of the finest dogs in the United States, and has repeatedlywon for them the highest honors at the bench show. He wasthe judge of the Westminster Kennel Club show in 1899 andagain in 1900, and enjoys the confidence of all dog-fanciers forthe soundness and impartiality of his
