neighboring town of Champaign, and at the University of Illi-nois, being graduated from the latter institution in 1880. Tenyears later the same university conferred upon him the degreeof Master of Literature. Mr. Conklin was thrown upon his own resources, not merelyfor continuing his education, but for supporting his very life, atthe early age of fourteen. He assumed the responsibility withindomitable courage. By hard work he earned sufficient money,as an employee in a queens-ware firm and as bookkeeper in ahardware house, to pay his way through two years of his collegecourse. Then his funds were exhausted, and he was compelledto stay out of college for a year, to earn more money. This hedid to such purpose that he was enabled, a year later, to reentercollege and complete his course, entirely upon his own resources,without seeking financial assistance from any one. BOLAND KAY CONKLIN 69 no debts. Thereupon lie borrowed fifty dollars from a friend,and went to Winfield, Kansas, where his brother was alreadysuccessfully established as the publisher of a newspaper. Hedid not go there as a visitor or as an idler. His first thoughtwas to get to work, and earn money to repay the loan and to sup-port himself. The very day after his arrival at Winfield, accord-ingly, he entered the real-estate and loan business, with a firmthat afterward became well known all through the southern partof Kansas as Jarvis, Conklin & Co. At this time Kansas wasbeing settled with great rapidity, and the business of the firmgrew so rapidly that in a year it moved to Kansas City, Mis-souri, and was incorporated as the Jarvis-Conklin MortgageTrust Company, with a capital of one million dollars. It con-tinued its career for twelve years, its headquarters being removedin 1893 to New York, and it was generally recognized as one ofthe most conservative and at the same time ente
