JOHN ADOLPHUS KAMPING AMONG the citizens of North German origin who haveA risen to conspicuous and honorable standing in the UnitedStates, John Adolphus Kamping is entitled to good mention.He comes from Hanover, where his ancestors lived for manygenerations. His father, Frederick Kamping, was a farmer andhotel-keeper, a man of fine character and intellectual force. Thefather died when our subject was between three and four yearsold, and the care of the four children then devolved upon theirmother, Catherine Clara Kamping, a woman of ability and self-reliance. She soon brought them to this country. One of thechildren was drowned in Lake Erie, but with the remainingthree she settled at Cincinnati, where she ultimately remarried,her second husband being Frederick Placke. John Adolphus Kamping was born at Hanover, on March 29,1842. At the age of five years he was brought to Cincinnati,and was educated in the public schools of that city, the HughesHigh School, and the night high school. He
