On the 4tli of July, 1584, two English ships hove in sight of thecoast of North Carolina, somewhere about Cape Fear. They werethe vessels of Sir Walter Raleigh, and were on a voj-age of discovery,to take possession of some portion of the new world in the name ofthe crown of England. The day on which they first beheld theshores of our country has since become the great political holiday ofthe age, and is now distinguished as the anniversary, not of theorigin, but of the downfall of the authority of England over theUnited States. The commanders of these two ships were PhilipAmadas and Arthur Barlowe; and the ceremony which the)^ performedupon the coast of North Carolina, and which I am now about tocelebrate, is perhaps one of the most memorable events in the historyof mankind.
