A blue cloak lined with ermine falls in a graceful/ * fold across her knee, and is retained on her shoulders by jew- >V * i /( ( A < ^ / elled clasps. Her fingers toy with a rope of pearls, and she holds her head on one side with a somewhat coquettish expression, theeyes looking out of the picture past the spectator. Height, 37 inches; width, 30 inches.Purchased of Messrs. Sui/ley & Co., London. No. 52 THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH, R.A. 1727—1788 4 A STORMY LANDSCAPE chr. A tremendous gust of wind has struck a huge tree whichoccupies the principal place in the composition. The sturdyboughs bend, and the lighter branches stream out against thesky under the pressure of the gale. The storm cloud has ob-scured the sun and casts a deep shadow over the landscape,which shows a wide and fertile valley extending to a range oflow hills on the horizon.
