JYNGIPICUS (jin-ji, kuss) n. m. Genre doiseaux grim-peurs, famille des picidés, comprenant quelques espècesde lAsie septentrionale. — Encycl. hes ji/ngipicus sont des épciches ou petitspics bariolés de gris, de blanc et de noir, avec le ventrefauve clair, grivelé de brun. On peut en prendre commeexemple le jyngipicus scinclilliceps, du nord do la Chine,dont la tôte est marquée do rouge vif.

Tout da-bord, en latin, quand le C, quiavait primitivement la valeurdun G, eut pris le son dur quoreprésentait le K, et que le Geut été inventé (vers le m s.av. notre ère), le K fut supplanté et éliminé. Il ne reparutque pour exprimer des mots d origine étrangère, ou dansquelques abréviations. Tandis que les alphabets germani-ques, slaves et Scandinaves, font largement usage de cettelettre, les langues romanes gardent, dans une certainemesure, la tendance des Latins à sen débarrasser. Dansla graphie médiévale, nous remarquons surtout la forme■ ■ i R, et doù dérive visiblement DÉRIVATIONS ET FORMES DU K DES ÉCRITURES LATINES
