That he still holds that high place among thedistinguished sons that Ohio has given to the Republicand the world was attested by the outpouring of peopleto celebrate the centennial anniversary of his birth andby the tributes that on three successive days fell fromthe lips of Ohios most eminent official representativeswho came from the nations capitol to speak on this oc-casion. The weather, which was cool and threatening on themorning of Thursday, April 27, 1922, the first day ofthe celebration, gradually settled and the two succeed-ing days were almost cloudless. The program care-fully planned by Judge Nichols and his associates onthe Centenary committee was successfully carried outwithout change except that occasioned by the absenceof Governor Davis who was prevented by illness fromattending. Among the distinguished persons presentwas the widow of General Fred D. Grant, who is themother of Major Ulysses S. Grant III and the Countess (221)

Harding, Mrs. Harding and hisparty arrived in the city at nine oclock Friday morning.Among the guests who came with him from Washing-ton were Mrs. Fred D. Grant, Mrs. Henry C. Corbin,Attorney General of the United States Harry M.Daugherty, Private Secretary to the President GeorgeB. Christian, Jr., Congressman Nicholas Longworthand a number of other Ohio congressmen. The President held a brief reception at the GibsonHouse, from which a little later at the head of a militaryescort and a procession of guests in automobiles heproceeded through flag-decked streets, thronged byapplauding thousands, to the boat landing at the foot ofBroadway Street.
