BAVARIA. domed covers, and high bases—mere verres de parade and not for use (Fig. 11 i).Many of the wider and more capacious ones are painted with portraits (Fig. 112), battle scenes,etc., excellently well done, or engraved with the diamond point with noble and armed men onhorseback, ready to ope the purple testament of bleeding war, allegorical and mythologicalfigures, and so forth. Others, smaller, are stringed as Pass glasses simple, or decorated inenamel with the Ages of Man, graphic stages of drunkenness, armorial achievements, illustra-tions and rude poetry inculcating crude moralities, views of castles and villages, series ofarmorial bearings, etc. (Fig. 113).
