THOMAS CARLYLE. honoured inn are the Botanical Gardens of theSociety of Apothecaries. The Albert Bridge, opposite Oakley Street, con-structed upon the suspension principle, was openedin 1873 ; it forms a useful communication betweenChelsea and Battersea Park. Cadogan Pier, closeto the bridge, serves as a landing-place for pas-sengers on the river steamboats. Near the river and Cheyne Walk was a largemulberry-garden, one of those established in thesuburbs of London by order of James I., about theyear 1610. Thoresby, writing in 1723, tells us in by George Morland. At the above date, saysMr. Larwood, this painting by Morland had beenremoved inside the house, and a copy of it hung upfor the sign. Unfortunately, however, the landlordused to travel about with the original, and put itup before his booth at Staines and Egham races,cricket matches, and similar occasions—all ofwhich removals, it may be presumed, did no greatgood to it.
