teachers, is vested,under the advice of the medical committee, in thegovernors at large; and every pupil of tlie school members of this committee ; and legally qualifiedmedical and surgical practitioners, whether gover-nors or not, are at liberty, on a proper introduction,to attend the practice of the hospital. The medicalgovernors are also at liberty to attend all lecturesdelivered by the teachers in the hospital school;and if residing within half a mile of the hospital,they are entitled to be summoned to all importantoperations, on paying a trifling contribution towardsthe expense of summoning. Thus the medical pro-fession at large has every opportunity to form itsopinion of the principles and practice taught in thehospital, an efficient voice in the management ofthe medical affairs of the institution, and a directinfluence in the system of education to be adoptedin the hospital school, of which their own sons orprivate pupils might be members. St. Marys Hospital, being without endowment,is supported entirely by the voluntary contributionsand donations of the public at large; and whenthe number of patients annually relieved is takeninto consideration, it is easy to imagine that the ex-penses of the institution are very great, amountingas they do to something like ;/■ 10,000 annually.Within a short distance of St. Marys is anothercharitable institution, the Paddington ProvidentDispensary, which dates its career of usefulnessfrom the year 1838. Upwards of 7,000 personsare relieved here during the course of the year.Another very useful charity in the neighbourhoodis the Dudley Stuart Home for the Houseless,in :Market Street, close by. Here a temporaryhome is afforded to destitute and houseless personsof good character, and means are adopted forrestoring them to their position in life.
