The collection of animals first establishedhere in 1828 was soon after swelled by the royal collection in the Tower of London, of which wehave spoken in a previous volume,t the remainsof which Avere transferred hither in 1834. Thecollection in the Tower is said to have grown outof a group of three leopards, presented by theEmperor Frederick H., the greatest zoologist ofhis day, to Henry HL, in allusion to the three leopards which then adorned the royal shield of • .Sec Vol. IV., p. 316. t See Vol. II., p. large number of species of mammalia and birdshas been obtained, either by bequest or by pur-chase, detailed lists of which are to be found in thesuccessive annual reports of the society.
