J DWELLINGS OF THE POOR. 259 Artisans and Labourers Dwellings Act, in orderto compel the owners of such disgraceful propertyto do their duty by their tenants. Dr. Whitmoredraws attention more especially to several tene-ments in Marylebone. One of these, he thenremarks, contains nineteen rooms, which wouldappear to have been originally constructed withespecial disregard to order in arrangement, uni-formity, and convenience. Every part of this In Church Street, which connects the Groveand Edgware Roads, is the Royal Alfred Theatre.This place of amusement is celebrated for its sen-sational dramas and cheap prices. It was firstopened in 1842, as a penny theatre, under thename of the Marylebone. It was enlarged in1854 to hold 2,000 persons; and more recentlythe name has been altered to the Royal Alfred.Many of Shakespeares plays have been performed

Lisson Green in the 18th century. miserable abode is in a ruinous and dilapidatedcondition : the flooring of the rooms and stair-cases is worn into holes, and broken away; theplaster is crumbling from the walls; the roofs let inthe wind and rain; the drains are very defective ;and the general aspect of the place is one of extremewretchedness. The number of persons living inthis house is forty-seven. He adds that his firstimpulse was to condemn the house as unfit forhuman habitation, but that he hesitated to do so,fearing to drive the poor inhabitants into roomsmore foul and squalid still. It will scarcely, weimagine, be beUeved by our grandchildren thatsuch things could have happened in the thirty-eighth year of Queen Victorias reign in so wealthya district as this. here. Close by, on the west side of the EdgwareRoad, another large establishment, where entertain-ment is nightly provided, is the Metropolitan MusicHall.
