As I got rather tired out visiting at Lisbon I am quitein hopes no one will know of my being on board until the vesselhas left. The Governor General has just come on board to make a visitto the Admiral, and after that we are going on shore to have aview of the Cathedral by daylight, and to return in time fordinner. We are invited to a party tonight (Sunday) from 8 tillII. Of course we dont go, but tomorrow we go to lunch on theKenosha, one of our own vessels. Give a great deal of love to . . .and remember me affectionately to all my old friends in Morris-town. I always think of them all particularly on Sundays, whenI have a great longing for the services of the dear old churchthere. The Franklin left Cadiz at 6 a.m., arriving at Gibraltar at3 P.M. on the 19th of April, where she remained until the 28th.

REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM RADFORD From a Portrait Made While in Command of theEuropean Squadron, 18(39-70 THE EUROPEAN SQUADRON 343 During that time the English Governor, Sir Richard Ayrie (I amnot certain as to the spelling of his name) and his wife gave sev-eral entertainments in honor of the Commander-in-Chief of theAmerican Fleet—a dinner, garden party, etc., etc. One thing thatinterested us greatly while there was the drilling of the Highlandregiment—(their costume was then a rarer sight to behold than itis today)—and particularly enjoyable was the visit to the fortifica-tions in the great rock. For this, donkeys were provided for theparty, and as they were decidedly diminutive in size, and manyof the officers who accompanied us unquestionably long of limb,the occasion, despite its deep interest, was also one of consider-able merriment.
