The Buffalo Carpet Beetlb (Anthrenus Scrophularice).—For the last few yearsthe larva, or grub, of this beetle has become a dreaded pest in houses, where it feeds oncarpets and other woollen goods ; it is a hairy creature, about half an inch in length whenfull grown, and is quite active. The beetle is not more than one-fourth of an inch long,very prettily marked with red, black and white bands or bars (Fig. 1). These beetles pass the winter under bits of bark, etc., and in May they emerge inlarge numbers to feed on the blossoms of cherry and spirsea. Last spring thousands ofthese beetles were observed on the shrubs on the college lawn.
