Description
English: Three officers making themselves comfortable, near Miraumont-le-Grand, France, during World War I. Steel helmets had many more uses than the War Offfice might have intended. This photograph shows three Royal Artillery officers making themselves comfortable with salvaged chairs set around a brazier made out of an oil drum and cooking in a steel helmet.

Experienced soldiers were able to make life a little more comfortable by salvaging bits and pieces from ruined houses and adding to the official rations.
