One of the most abundant breeders on the cliffs of Flamborough, anda great enemy to the eggs of other birds. Before the Bird-Act, whenthe Guillemots were much shyer, the descent of a man was generallyenough to frighten them off the ledges ; and then, Lowney tells me, thethievish Jackdaws made spoil of their eggs. I have seen the shellswhich these knaves have carried to the top of the cliff and left theref.Sometimes a Jackdaw more bold than the rest attacks a Kittiwake; andthen a hard fight ensues ; but the same authority tells me that the Kittiwakesget the best of it. Through Mr. Boucards kindness I have lately been able to add to ourCentral-American collection of birds two species of Odontophorinse—one ofwhich is the tolerably common South-American Eupsychortyx leucotis, theother a species of Odontophorus which I do not hesitate to describe belowas new. The two specimens (one of each species) were contained in twocollections evidently made by our late collector, Enrique Arce, in Veragua, one of which came directly, and the other indirectly into Mr. Boucards hands. Both from the style in which the skins are made up, and from the birdskinsassociated with them, there cannot be the slightest doubt as to their origin.
