ouge gri-sâtre, tantôt dun brun olivâtre plus ou moins clair,et tachetés de brun foncé, de brun noir et dun grissombre; en longueur, ils ont 6 cent. 5-9 mil!. ,et 4 cent. 4-6 mill. de largeur diamétrale. Cette espèce se nourrit pareillement de toutessortes de substances : poissons vivants ou morts,jeunes grenouilles, frai, chair récente ou infecte,insectes et limaçons, tout lui est bon. Elle se rabathabituellement avec force de lair sur sa proie, lasaisit à la surface de leau, sans sy poser, et lavaleen poursuivant son vol ; quelquefois, cependant, ellecherche sa vie à terre, dans le marais et sur lerivage, où abondent par moments les vers et lesinsectes dont elle est friande. Elle donne assezfacilement dans le piège. On en prend beaucoupsur les côtes du midi de la France, et les pêcheursen tiennent de vivantes, quils nourrissent commedes poules, après les avoir privées dune bonnepartie de leurs ailes.
