troit demême couleur sur laile. Le bec est court, large,gibbeux en dessus à sa base et jaune rougeâtre,avec longlet dun rouge jaunâtre, les narines et lebord des mandibules noirs; liris est blanc; lestarses et les doigts rouges, à lexception des mem-branes, qui sont noires. La femelle est un peu plus courte que le mâle ;elle a le dessus du corps dun brun de suie, ledessous varié de gris blanchâtre et de brun noi-râtre; elle ne possède que deux taches blanches,lune près du bec, lautre sur loreille. Son bec estsans gibbosités,plus court et moins large que dansle mâle, et dun brun cendré avec sa base noirâtre;liris brun ; les tarses et doigts sont rougeâtres. Les jeunes mâles qui nous arrivent ressemblentà la femelle, mais leur bec paraît un peu plusrenflé, quoique encore privé de gibbosités. Les mers du Nord, celles qui baignent lesOrcades, la Suède et la Norwège, sont les régionsque ce Canard habite durant la saison des beaux ORNITHOLOGIE DELA SAVUIK AnaHdées.

On ne letrouve au rivage que lorsque la vague ly pousse etdans ses moments de repos. Sa marche est malassurée, car il chancelle ou tombe presque à toutesles secousses quil éprouve. Il niche parmi lesherbes ou les broussailles des lieux marécageux,et pond 8 à 10 œufs, dun blanc grisâtre, légè-rement nuancé de jaunâtre, sans taches ; leurgrand diamètre a 6 cent. 2-3 m
