During the years that I published the O. and O., Iwas surprised to find how little was known of theworks of Wilson and Audubon, by our collectors.Some did not even know of their existence, but col-lected eggs as a boy would marbles or postagestamps. The reading of the worlvs of Wilson andAudubon should be tlie college through which everycollector of skins or eggs should pass. All the mod-ern works combined cannot substitute the pleasure tobe obtained from the reading of these two great mensworks. When one fully understands them, and thedilliculties they have overcome, he is ready to sayto the modern critic, hold! they are above criti-cism, and thou canst not dim the lustre of their fairfame.
