afb. N°. 243. Onvoltooid gebleven torens. Enkele steden, hoezeermet een torenbouw begon-nen, hebben dezen echterniet meer kunnen voltooien. De stad Den Br iel,welke na de instorting in1456 van haren, pas 40 jaarte voren gebouwden torenden bouw van een nieuwentoren begon, zag zich,halverwege gekomen, ver-plicht dien bouw voor goedte staken. Hetzelfde had plaatsin Dordrecht, zie afb.N°. 71, in Leeuwarden,in W ij k-b ij -D u u r s t e d e,in Zierikzee, enz. Laatstgenoemde stadbegon in haar bloeitijd, inhet midden der XVde eeuw,met den bouw van eengrootschen toren, een warereuzentoren, bestemd omde grootste, de hoogste ende monumentaalste torenvan ons land te worden. Een der leden vande beroemde bouwmeesters-familie De Keldermans vanM e c h e 1 e n , werd daartoehet ontwerp en de uitvoe-ring van den bouw opge-dragen , die in 1454 begon-nen, in 1477 op 50 M.,nauwelijks éCn vierde harerhoogte, werd gestaakt. De Sint-Martinitoren te Groningen, gebouwd in dejaren 1369—82, naar photo. 108 NIEUWE KKRKSTOREN TE AMSTERDAM. was die stad, door meerdere rampen getroffen, niet meer bij machteharen torenbouw voort te zetten en te voltooien. Nieuwe Kerkstoren te Amsterdam. In de Vroedschapsvergadering van 2 Sept. 1645 werden HeerenBurgemeesteren dier stad gemachtigd om voor de Nieuwe, de gewezenSint-Catharijne Kerk op den Dam een monumentalen toren te bouwen, enden 20sten Juni 1647 werd plechtig de eerste steen gelegd van den inopbouw 19.30 M. breeden voet. In 1652 echter, toen de bouw nog slechts tot op 11 M. + straatgevorderd was, werd deze voorloopig gestaakt, ten einde met des te meerkracht den bouw van een nieuw raadhuis te kunnen beginnen. Die voorloopige staking veranderde echter in eene blijvende, de tijdtoch van grootsche werken zonder eenig direct nut was eindelijk voorbij,en de toren bleef 11 M. hoog, tot de Vroedschap in 1785 besloot omdien sta in den weg af te breken en
