veliness. The Pectoral Cross layon the dressing-table. 1 wanted to thinkonly of my part, but somehow the oldsad refrain kept ringing in my ears, Not all the Kings horses nor all theKings men ; and Crichton himselfstood in the room. I gave a little cryof joy at the sight of him. You are very beautiful to-night, hesaid, as he took my hands, and I havebrought you this, to make the PectoralCross complete. I have not forgottenyour promise to me, he said, takingfrom its box a curiously wrought chainof gold. Attaching it to the cross heplaced it about my neck. There ! nowyou are perfect, he added, as he fastenedthe clasp. Hush ! not a word. Donttalk to me now. I will see you afterthe performance. Act as well as youlook, and you will be as great as youdesire. As he turned to leave the room, heand Von Ostroi met face to face. Crich-ton barely nodded, and failed to see thehand which the actor held out to him.As he strode down the passage, VonOstroi looked after him with an evillight in his eye.

As he stoodlooking scornfully after Crichton, I hadtime to observe the consummate art ofthe mans make-up. The picture he hadmade on the background which naturehad given him was one which filled mewith aesthetic delight. Othello, the Moor, had wiped out every suggestion of VonOstroi, the Austrian. The picture, however, was Orientalrather than barbaric. The flesh of theface, the arms and the neck looked as ifit had sucked in the sunshine of burn-ing skies. Its mellow brown gave thekey-note to his costume. The soft fab-rics of which this was composed ran intoone another as naturally as paints onthe canvas of a great painter. Yellowsof a sulphurous hue lost themselves inshadows of brown ; bro
