He has workedout an existence against great odds and ithas given him a character and physiquewhich makes him notable among his fellowcountrymen. These features are also characteristics ofthe Normandy folk, but to a less degree.They have prospered more than their Bre-ton brothers, their lands yield them easierand heavier harvests and they are a littlecloser in touch with the world outside.But, take them both side by side and theyoutmeasure in every point of comparisontheir brothers in corresponding walks oflife in the rest of France. It seems to be quite the custom in Brit-tany to attend divine service first and thenbarter for such goods as may be neededafter the religious services are finished.

Some of the wayfarers we encountered. When we left Vannes we went by themost direct road to Auray, about a halfhours run, and there turned southwesttoward Carnac down by the coast which wereached about an hour after leavingVannes.
