a long time since they hadsuch a foreign entertainment. There was yet a run of one hundredmiles to Kioto, when, in a very roughpiece of road, an axle broke. It wasnear a village, and all the inhabitantswere called in consultation. Then themost cunning of the workmen took thestrange machine in hand, and, by a cu-rious device, set it in order again. A packhorse went by, then a groupof men with a cart-load of bamboo-trunks ; and the country slipped away between the slanting pines, and didnot stop till it reached the blue sidesand the white curves of snow-cappedmountains. In the evening shades a tea-house was reached. Soon the dark shad-ows and twilight deepened into night. As the road approached Kioto thehints of Western civilization becamemore marked ; and when the city wasreached all the comforts of a continentalhotel were to be had for the asking.Next day, an uneventful run of thirty-five miles brought me, alas, to Kobeand the sea, and ships bound for theuttermost parts of the earth.
