sion of a proper selec-tion to fill the post of resident headcoach at New Haven first started it wasseriously suggested by outsiders thatShevlin, the man who had saved a lostcause, would be the right man for thepost. Shevlin didnt want the post andcould not have taken it on account of hisbusiness responsibilities. But even werethese obstacles overcome, he would havebeen the last man in the world to regu-late the destinies of an eleven for a fullseason. Physically Shevlin is a superman. Hehas an inexhaustible supply of nervousenergy. He knows football. He in-spires enthusiasm. However, there arelimits to the availability of a genius, andShevlin will not make a good head coachfor a ten-week season until such time asthe race produces a hardier set of youngmen. He is a dynamic force too power-ful for continuous contact with a teammade up of ordinary human beings. Inthe midst of his enthusiasm for footballand Yale he forgets that the race onlyproduces one Shevlin in a football gen-eration.

AN AVIATOR WHO LOOPS THE LOOP This is a photograph of Pegoud, the French aviator, who has accomplished the feat of turninga complete somersault in the air in a monoplane. He drives the machine headlong toward theearth and then manipulates his planes in such a manner as to turn it upside down, completing theevolution by bringing it on around to a correct position. In the photograph above he is shown in theupper lefthand corner of the plate flying upside down. The landing wheels can be seen in the airabove the planes.
