It was past noon of the next day be-fore the pack, or ten of the hounds, gothome. They were neither footsore norweary to any extent, and not hungry.I think fresh doe venison largely con-tributed to their lack of the usual vo-racious hound-appetite. Tambelle, the fleet and beautiful, thetwo-year-old daughter of Tambour, wasmissing. Jean Baptiste noted her ab-sence at once, and grimly frowning andregretfully shaking his grizzled head,,the old hound-keeper declared thatTambelle would never come back ; shehad been caught and devoured by oneof the big alligators of Hermitage bayouwhile stopping for a drink of its black,brackish water. The old man was surely correct, forno one has ever seen the gifted youngsoprano of our Grande Cheniere pack,since she, for the last time, passed thedead-line of that hunt.
