what may be termed the standard type. Not long ago, at Madison Square Gar-den, I devoted some time to Cactus andMaid Marian. Here we find a good dealof the old type, though not quite so tak- ognized type to breed to, keep as closeas possible to it, and then let conforma-tion, coat, and condition decide wherethe ribbons should go. The trouble with breeders appears tobe that the moment a dog of any type,or of no recognized type, wins an impor-tant trial, there is a desire to breed tohim because he is a winner, and not be-cause he is by blood, conformation anddisposition the best dog to be mated withthe bitches sent to him. The typical English setter is not onlya handsome dog, but he is admirably suit-ed to his work. As he must be both fastand enduring his form shows a blending,or happy medium, between the speedylines of the greyhound and the endur-ance model of the foxhound. The neck is moderately long,clean and graceful. The feet may be eitherwhat is termed harefoot, or catfoot,so long as there is plenty of hair between the toes ; for in this hairy foot lies thesetters sole advantage over the pointeras a worker in severe weather and overice, frozen, or other trying ground. Thetail is of medium length, strong at rootand tapering to a point; it is carriedwith a moderate curve, and it should bewell feathered.
