Fort Winnebago in 1831—Portage City—where Mrs. Kinzie passed half of her life. and when the Indians asked them wherethey were going, pointed to the cattle yardacross the river and answered, for fod-der. They had not gone a quarter of amile before they heard the guns of thehostiles. Meanwhile, the fort cannon were firedto call all soldiers in, and extinguishingtorches, a few officers ascended the riverwith muffled paddles to warn settlers.
