Waitere was taught carving by his elder realtives at Rotorua and was subsequently employed by the manager of the Geyser Hotel at Whakarewarewa as a professional carver from 1892. In a workshop there he carved architectural pieces for the hotel as well as for the thermal area. He was involved with carving on many houses at Rotorua including Hatutapu as well as gateways and palisades at Whakarewarewa. Significantly to this item he carved massive mantelpieces for the Grand Hotel Auckland and the Grand Hotel Rotorua. This frame is based around the fascia carvings of a whare whakiro. The barge boards (maihi) are carved with pairs of contorted manaia figures supported on figurative uprights in the manner of whakawae (door jambs) flanked by panels of conjoined rauru spirals. The lower panel replicates the papaekaiawha threshold board. Beneath the barge boards is a gable board detailed with multiple manaia heads flanking a standing figure. The central koruru mask is missing. This frame was stored for decades in a shed in Parnell. W.2075mm. Y registered

Notes A number of homes and public spaces were decorated in a Maori manner in the search for a more individualised interior, and as tastes and understandings changed. Tene Waitere was taught carving and became a professional carver from 1892. From his workshop, he carved architectural pieces for the hotel as well as for visitors to the thermal area. This overmantel or frame is based around the fascia carvings of a whare whakiro. The central koruru is missing.
