Title
Palaeolithic Handaxe
Description
English: Probably a roughout for a Neolithic polished stone axe. It was initailly described as

'A lithic implement considered to be of Acheulian date (Lower Palaeolithic) and also thought to be a handaxe, of ovate form and very regular. It is quite rounded, probably as a result of wear during burial, although a large amount of the creation process is still visible through the removed flake pattern. The flint is of a light fawn colour, but is so patinised that it is hard to estimate its true colour. This noted, it is reckoned that the fawn is the underlying base colour, overlaid by a yellow brown patina on both faces. The artefact is in an fair condition, albeit a little worn and presenting some recent scars'

Dr Kevin Leahy observed that the shape of this object is wrong for a Handaxe but correct for a Neolithic axehead. The weak conchoidal fracturing suggests that this object is stone rather than flint and a later date is suggested..
