Title
Palaeolithic Handaxe
Description
English: A flint handaxe of probable lower Palaeolithic date. This tool was identified and recorded from photographs, making exact identification uncertain. However, the form is consistent with an Acheulian Flat-butted or 'Bout Coupé' handaxe (see J. Wymer; 1968; pp. 45-68).

In plan, the tool is sub-triangular, having a roughly horizontal bottom edge and extending to a point at the top. All three sides are slightly convex and the corners are rounded rather than sharp in nature. No side view was available to the recorder but the surfaces of the bi-facially worked tool appear to be slightly convex. Both sides show evidence of broad flake removal scars, which generally seem to be angled downwards and outwards from the centre. The edges of the tool are slightly chipped, either through use or as a result of post-depositional damage.

The tool measures approximately 77mm long by 63mm wide.
