Title
Palaeolithic Handaxe
Description
English:

Flint hand axe, 139 x 76 x 37mm.

Oval in plan and tending to a plano-convex section, with a prominent boss on the convex face near to the butt. Recent chips show pale grey flint, heavily stained a glossy brown. The body is extensively frost cracked and it is surprising that it has endured to the present day. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 - 100,000 BP.

Additional note by E. W.:

This example is perhaps particularly interesting as it has been made on a large flake (the 'débitage' technique), rather than shaped from a nodule (the 'façonage' technique), which is more common in Africa than the European region.
