Title
Palaeolithic handaxe
Description
English: Incomplete flint rough-out, knapped pre-form for a polished or flaked axe of Neolithic date (3750 BC - 2100 BC). The blade end of the rough-out survives: about a third of the lengh, including the butt is missing. The blade end is straighter and flatter than usual on finished Neolithic axes showing where it still had to be shaped. From the blade end the sides widen slightly to the widest point, one tenth of the way up the remaining section, then narrow gradually towards the point. The point (at least a third of the axe) has been lost to an old break. The break has the same patination as the rest of the rough-out suggesting it was not broken recently. It is pointed oval in section and symmetrical in plan and profile with a slightly reverse S shape to the edge. The rough-out is completely covered in shallow flake removal scars with evidence for more precise retouch around some edges. There is an area of cortex remaining next to the break on the point, covering c.5% of the surface. It can be speculated that the cortex marks an area of weakness in the flint and the rough-out broke at this point and was therefore discarded. The surface has some white to pale grey weathering with iron staining and the flint underneath is pale-mid grey. It is 92.8mm long, 68.5mm wide and 28.2mm thick; it weighs 206 grams.
