Qaza Road. JAFFA. 2. Route. 9 Jaffa was definitively brought under tlie Jewish yoke by the Maccabees(i Mace. X. 74 et aeq.). Christianity was introduced here at an early period(Acts ix. 36, etc.). During the Jewish war Joppa was destroyed; it wasafterwards rebuilt, but was soon again destroyed by Vespasian as being ahaunt of pirates. Several bishops of Joppa are mentioned as attendingvarious church synods. The bishopric was restored by the Crusadei*s,and the town also became the seat of a count (1099). In 1126 the districtof Joppa came into the possession of the Knights of St. John. The townwas captured and destroyed by Melik el-Adil, brother of Saladin, in 1187,and by Safeddin in 1191, recaptured by Richard Coeur-de-Lion, taken in1197 by Melik el-Adil, restored to the Christians in 1204, and finallydestroyed in 1267 by Beybars. Towards the end of the 17th cent, the im-portance of Jaffa began to revive, and ftom that period dates the constructionof the quay. In 1799 the place was take
