lute proof thathere was actually the site of the deme of Ikaria (see below, p. 71)—more than this, that the official scat or centre of the deme could not be fardistant. Gravestones wdth mention of the deme to which the deceasedbelonged establish nothing more than a possibility that the place offinding may have been the actual deme-site, but it is hardly conceivablethat a public decree of a deme concerning only its internal affairs shouldbe set up anj^vhere but within the limits of the deme. Thus, by thediscovery of this inscription alone, the first object of our excavationswas accomplished. During the remainder of this week the finds wereof no special importance, and on the first of the following week aviolent snowstorm obliged us to return to Athens. Wednesday, Feb. 15, work was resumed, and the remainder of theweek w^as devoted mainly to taking down the walls of the church andto digging beneath it.
