growth and differentiation there, but acts as a poison moreand more feebly with receding distance from the focal center until inthe neighboring green parts it has become sufficiently attenuated tofunction as a stimulant rather than as an inhibitory factor. Thistheory is also borne out by the writers histological studies. Not only are the vein islets highly variable in size, but they areoften greatly distorted in shape. In many cases they are linear inoutline, and with reference to the spot they approximate the arrange-ment of spokes in a wheel (PL I, fig. 1; PL X, fig. B). Thus itwill be seen that the direction of their greatest expansion may ormay not parallel the direction of greatest expansion in the leaf bladeas a whole. That is, the size, shape, and arrangement of the veinislets in these chlorotic spots of the secondary stage are controlledfrom the focal center of the spot rather than by the normal mor-phogenic forces of the leaf. Vein Islets of Unsectioned and Unstained Pecan Leaves. A, and C to E are from photomicrographs of leaves preserved in alcohol. B is from a photomicro-graph of a dry herbarium specimen. All at the same magnification. X about 60. The whitespots are calcium-oxalate crystal aggregates. A to D.—Yellow spots of rosetted leaflets in thesecondary stage, showing the distortion in shape and the variation in size of the vein islets. E —Similar view of vein islets in a normal leaflet, showing approximately uniform size and regulararrangement. Photomicrographs by the writer. Bui. 1038, U. S. Dept. of Agriculture. PLATE XI
