. On either side of the pedestal is a vase,one with a lily, the other a rose, with the symbolicvine beneath. Under this appears a small crownedfigure—there are many conflicting theories as towhom this represents. Gilbert considers it aportrait of King PhiUp Augustus, who had sup-ported by gifts the building of the church ; others—Ruskin, Durand, etc.—incline to the beliefthat it represents David. On the jambs of the doors are the wise andfooHsh virgins. In the tympanum is a repre-sentation of God the Father and the Day of Judg-ment. On the summit of the gable is a statueof St. Michael and the dragon. On either handare great statues of the -Apostles and the fourgreat prophets : on the left hand of Christ areSt. Peter, St. Andrew, St. James the Greater,St. John, St. Matthew, St. Simon, Isaiah, Jere-miah. On the right are St. Paul, St. James theLess, St. Philip, St. Bartholomew, St. Thomas,St. Jude, Ezekiel, Daniel. Each figure carries Viollet-le-Duc, Dictionnaire de VArchitecture.

NAVE, LOOKING EAST, AMIENS CATHEDRAL. AMIENS 173 the emblem peculiar to the personified. Undereach are two quatrefoils in which are repre-sented the virtues for which each Apostle wasremarkable. In a work of this kind want of space rendersit impossible to give the interpretation of the118 quatrefoils with which the west front isdecorated. The south portal is dedicated to the VirginMother, who holds the infant Christ: beneath herfeet is the human-headed serpent; the historyof Adam and Eve is depicted on the lower partof the pedestal. The tympanum is divided intothree parts, the first containing six Old Testa-ment personages, among them Moses and Aaron,the other two the Death and Crowning of theVirgin. As in the central portal, there are largestatues on either side. On the left hand of-theVirgin are the Angel Gabriel, Virgin Annunciate,Virgin Visitant, EUzabeth, Virgin in Presentation,Simeon.
