Description
English: K.P.C. de Bazel. Uitbreiding Philipsdorp, Eindhoven, 1916-1918. Collectie NAi, BAZE 1490

In Nederland is zo’n tuinstad nooit gebouwd.

Howard’s garden cities were new towns for 20,000 to 30,000 inhabitants, with a round, perfectly geometric form. It was divided into zones for residential use and for industry, and there were greenbelts for recreational and agricultural use. The land was communal property, so there was room for social amenities and parks. Garden cities of this type were never built in the Netherlands; the much smaller ‘garden villages’ that were realised here, such as Philipsdorp in Eindhoven and Het Lansink in Hengelo, are factory villages that were private initiatives for the factory workers.
