ms or the soles (as seen in the second illustration) is not alwaysso characteristic, and in many cases its resemblance to eczema is somarked that the most expert diagnostician is puzzled to decide uponthe nature of the eruption. In the case photographed the elevatedand somewhat scalloped border of the patches would speak stronglyin favor of syphilis. The third illustration shows infiltrated patches with a healingcentre and a raised margin. The latter tends to advance in a ser-piginous or creeping manner, often healing on one side while spreadingon the other, and thereby producing gyrate lines or patches of ahorseshoe or kidney shape. The fourth illustration shows a rare form of late syphilis usuallyaffecting the hands or feet, and characterized by a warty conditionof the skin, with or without ulceration. This eruption has beentermed syphiloderma vegetans. A somewhat similar condition of thecutaneous surface may be found in ichthyosis and in certain casesof chronic eczema. PLATE LXXXV.

This usually coexists with one of the early disseminateeruptions. Owing to the thickness of the palmar epidermis it maydevelop slowly and not appear in full bloom until the papular orpustular eruption, of which it is a part, has almost disappeared fromother portions of the body. Unlike the late squamous syphilide,it always affefts both palms. The large number and small size ofthe lesions prevent its being mistaken for eczema. The upper right illustration presents a sca
