Text Appearing Before Image:
The early erythematous syphilide is rarely observed to be asgeneral and as distinct as in the case which forms the subject of theaccompanying illustration. It is frequently seen only upon the abdo-men and flexor aspect of the forearms, and often appears so faint asto resemble the mottling of the skin seen upon certain patients witha poor circulation when the body is stripped and exposed to a coolatmosphere. In most cases the macules do not exist alone but areassociated with lesions of a more or less papular character. Indeed, the centre of a macule sometimes appears darker than its margin andis slightly elevated, and at this point a papule may develop. In this patient the macular eruption developed suddenly abouttwo months after the appearance of the chancre. It was of a brightred color at first, disappearing under pressure of the finger, and dis-appeared in a few weeks, gradually becoming duller in its hue andfinally presenting the appearance of a faint, yellowish stain. PLATE LXXIX.SYPHILODERMA PAPULOSUM SYPHILODERMA PAPULOSUM The papular syphilide may occur in several forms, presenting avariety of clinical features. The miliary eruption consists of pinheadsized papules usually occurring in small clusters and is comparativelyrare. The lenticular eruption, which is the most common form, ischaracterized by disseminated papules of split pea size. These mayhe few or numerous and are symmetrically distributed over head, trunk, and extremities. The large papular syphilide usually consistsof fewer lesions which may be scaly, simulating psoriasis, circinate andresembling ringworm or moist and appearing like mucous patchesupon the skin. The unusually copious eruption upon the back shown in theillustration was of the ordinary lenticular variety. It had existed forabout six weeks at the time the photograph was taken, and withouttreatment the lesions, especially upon the shoulders, were tending toflatten
