DescriptionPhotographic postcard of the wharf at Clarence River, Grafton, with a three masted barquentine and ferries (8385548124).jpg |
English: The back of this photographic postcard is printed in brown ink. 'Post Card' is written at the top centre in large capital letters with a logo of a coat of arms with lion to left and a kangaroo to the right. The word 'Empire' is written above. This object relates to Douglas Ballantyne Fraser who served in the RAN Bridging Train. It represents the story of a little known aspect of the Royal Australian Navy - the RAN Bridging Train. In existence for only a short time (1915-1917) the unit nonetheless played a vital role in World War I by preparing in advance for the troops, supplying them during manoeuvres and battles, and providing an exit platform for them when wounded or withdrawn from battle. They were the first members of the RAN to go into the area, and the last to leave. |
