togetherby the waves; but Mr. McCallas statement is confirmed by ourfriend Mr. Andrews, who observed it cast up in similar abundanceat Arran. No species can be more distinct. The very patent, oppositebranches, and the invariably opposite, distichous, horizontal ramuliare its peculiar characteristics. It is most nearly related to C. Hut-chinsia and C. diffusa, of which it has the size, rigidity, and some-thing of the habit. But the opposite ramuli clearly separate itfrom either. Both the varieties represented in our plate arefrom Roundstone Bay. I cannot find that it has been noticed in any continentalwork. The name, given by Chauvin, under which it was re-ceived from M. Lenormand by Mr. Berkeley, does not appear tohave been published, and this is the only continental authoritywhich I have been able to ascertain for the species. Cladophora Macaliana; filaments setaceous, rigid, full green, very flexuous,loosely bundled together, excessively branched; branches alternate orrarely opposite, zigzag, very patent; ramuli short, recurved, simple, orpectinated, obtuse; articulations twice or thrice as long as broad;endoclirome rather dense.
