Description
English: Embroidered picture, unfinished, fine printed cotton for embroidery, Map of Europe with decorative oval border embroidered. Printers inscription, "Published 2nd Jan'y 1797 by Laurie and Whittle No 53 Fleet Street London" Floral border includes amongst others acorns, heartsease, rose, oakleaves and acorns, carnations Map samplers were popular from 1770 till 1820. They were often a schoolroom exercise for girls combining needlework and geography, with an artistic border allowing room for decorative expression. This map, printed on cloth in 1797, is likely to have been stitched with its intended frame already chosen, hence the border being incomplete. Vivien Caughley, Volunteer, Applied Arts

Notes Towards the end of the eighteenth century maps became a popular type of sampler. Map outlines were commercially printed onto cloth, leaving the stitcher to outline details in colours of her choice. Maps within oval borders appeared from about 1780, allowing scope to display decorative accomplishments as well as geographic knowledge and needlework skill. Laurie and Whittle were well respected London mapmakers. Contemporary attitudes towards the physical world and their place in it are revealed by their company details being visible on the cloth.
