Transcript InfoField | The Friars, Chelmsford. This is one of the many interesting and curious old houses which are still to be found in the old streets of Chelmsford, which was formerly a manor of the Bishops of London. Bishop Maurice (temp. Henry I.) built a stone bridge of the Cann and diverted into the town the public highway formerly passing through Writtle, thereby making Chelmsford the great thoroughfare to Suffolk and Norfolk. |
