Notes

Colgan percussion pistol, circa 1900 Belonged to Sgt. L Sheppard, 2nd Auckland Company, Auckland Volunteer Garrison Artillery. The maker is probably Colgan, Gun Maker of Wakefield Street, Auckland, who is listed as a gunmaker in the 1860s, and is possibly the same person as George Colgan who had a business in Glebe, NSW in the 1850s. history- Belonged to- Sgt George Lewis Sheppard, New Zealand Garrison Artillery Volunteers, c1900. George Sheppard was born in Auckland in 1878, and it is possible that this pistol may have originally belonged to his father who worked in Auckland as a bootmaker. The gun maker is almost certainly George W Colgan who was working as a gunmaker at 43 Wakefield Street, Auckland in the 1860s. He was also associated with Colgan fun maker of Waterford, Ireland, and may be the same George Colgan who is listed as a gun maker at Glebe, New South Wales in 1855.
