rbe, with its rooms overlooking a silentcourtyard; and there I passed, with my companionswho joined me, as enjoyable a sojourn as Italy hasever given me. Verona is too vast, her sights too manifold, to bemore than enumerated within the limits of a singlechapter, and enumerated without a word of descrip-tion. Those who wish a detailed catalogue or guidewill find it in the pages of Baedeker or Murray, or bet-ter still, within the covers of that pleasant little vol-ume, Verona, by Alethea Wiel, of the series of MedievalTowns, — in which also the history has been well re-lated. I have neither space nor desire to follow use-lessly in their footsteps; but shall transcribe my owngambles, from day to day, endeavoring through themto give an idea of the general plan and appearance ofthe historic city, of her principal avenues, piazzas, buildings, and monuments, of her life and people, andof the chief masterpieces of painting, showing thecharacteristics and unique powers of her wonderfulschool.

VER()XA. CHURCH OF ST. ANASTASIA. CHAPTER X VERONA LA MARMORINA Still westward hold thy way, till Alps look downOn old Veronas walled and classic town.Fair is the prospect; palace, tower, and spire. And blossomed grove, the eye might well admire. — Nicholas Mitchell. *In Verona the gutters are of marble. The ledge youlean upon, the flight of steps going up outside a house, the posts which block a street against the wheels, thefountain in the market-place, are all of white or redmarble. Pillars of white or red marble hold up theoverhanging roofs of shops, and the shopkeepers pastetheir advertisements over marble. Every street hasits marble doorway, window, or balcony, shaped aftera (fine ^Renaissance pattern or carved with beautifulornament. . . . And there are monsters enough in redand white marble, crouching at the doors of churches, leaning over from the lintels, and carved in slabs letinto the walls of houses. . . . And the two colors ofVeronese marbles, red and white, are repeated
