ment;over-eating, by which the digestiveapparatus and the intestines areunduly distended; relaxation of the an illustration showing how the malemuscular fibres of the intestines, organs are affected by constipation.so that they contract feebly; contraction of the respiratory organsby tight lacing or disease, so that the diaphragm cannot be deeplydepressed; weakness or flabbiness of the abdominal muscles, in con-sequence of which the bowels can give little or no pressure in front;and partial or complete paralysis of the rectum, in which case ithas not the power to expel substantial faeces. The predisposing causes are usually sedentary habits which depressthe nervous energy, and weaken those forces which give activity tothe various parts depended upon for the energetic expulsion of theuseless solid matters of the system.
