The disinfectantqualities of water by the absorption of deleterious gases, are so wellknown to intelligent people, that many keep vessels of water stand-ing in their sitting or lodging rooms. Water which has remained all night in leaden pipes, becomes affectedwith the properties of the lead, andthat which remains for a long time ina pump, with the impure gases of theatmosphere; and in both cases shouldbe drawn off before any is taken fordrinking purposes. Leaden pipes arechiefly used in cities, for conveyingaqueduct water into the houses, andtoo much care cannot be taken, whenno water has been drawn through thenight, to avoid taking any that mayhave stood in the pipes during theinterval. In summer, ice-water should be usedwith great caution, for if drank exces-sively, it causes irritations, and some-times fatal inflammations of the stom-ach and bowels.
