Notes carved picture made by a Japanese Prisoner of War, Okubo of 24 Compound, Featherston POW camp, and presented to one of the guards, CH Nicholson by another POW, Sakura Shinagawa, prisoner no 469, on 9 November 1943. It was later given by Mr Nicholson to Captain Meikle. In the camp "there were men who employed their talents making all sorts of handicraft articles from wood. For example they made walking sticks, carved elephants which were a favourite with the soldiers guarding the prison camp, and mah-jong tiles and the like; and in dealings with the guards they would exchange these for the cigarettes which they so desired, or for money with which they were able to buy musical instruments, or acquire what else they wanted."
