Marten had not heard ofthis order, and therefore when he didnot find Burruff at the gate, he beg-ged his hearer to carry him to the huton the heath ; and all the way thelittle boy talked to his hearer, and said POOR BURRUFF. how he would feed Burfv, and takecare of him : hut when he came uponthe heath, he saw no white dog*, nei-ther was there any shepherd there,nor any sheep or goats, only two gen-tlemen riding on an elephant. I do believe that vou never saw anelephant, and I am almost sure thatyou never rode upon one, therefore Ihave drawn the picture of this ele-phant for you ; it was a black one,and very large, and walked as fast asany horse could canter. O, how did little Marten cry !and how did he beg the bearer to pullthe arrow out of the dog:s side! butthe bearer w^ould not touch him: how-ever, he was so good as to hastenback with Marten, who sent thesweeper-man immediately to the poordog, to remove the arrow, and bringhim to his masters house ; and he pro-mised him a piece of silver money if hewould take care of the poor creature.BurrufFwas soon brought to his newhome, and laid on straw, and fed;and, as the arrow had been taken out,and the wound was not deep, he soonlicked it well: and then he was ableto attend upon his dear little masterwhen he was taking the anr, and onmany other occasions.
