It was a shortinterval between the dethronement ofthe Emperor and his death, in January,1873. This period was passed by theex-Empress with her husband, at Chisel-hurst, in Kent, and after his death shecontinued her residence in England, re-ceivins: distin<:juished attentions fromthe Queen and others in high station.

. ^^ .-^. .- y<LP.JZ -JioJD HENRY WARD BEECHER IN the biography of Harriet BeecherStowe, we have traced the early-American descent of the Beecher fam-ily, and have given an account of thecareer of the Rev, Lyman Beecher, thefather of the subject of the present no-tice by his marriage with Roxana Foote.Henry Ward Beecher was born atLitchfield, Connecticut, where his fath-er was engaged in jiastoral duties, onthe twenty-fourth of June, 1813. Hismother died when he was three yearsold, and his father having marriedagain, removed to Boston, where Hen-ry was placed in the Latin school ofthat city. Having little taste for theclassics, and a strong desire to followthe sea as a profession, his father sug-gested that he should j^repare himselffor the Navy. For this purpose hewas sent to school at Amherst, hisfather remarking on his departure, Ishall have that boy in the ministryyet. Here he labored perseveringlyto prepare himself for the Navy, andalso studied elocution under ProfessorJohn E.
